Level Design
For my college-level design project, I created a level centered around an adventurer's escape from an arctic environment, aiming to immerse players in an adventurous puzzle experience. Utilizing Unreal Engine 4, I crafted the level with a focus on designing obstacles, puzzles, and gameplay flow specifically tailored for player-versus-environment (PvE) experiences.
Concept Design
During the concept phase of this level, simplicity was key. My objective was to drive the level forward using events derived from the environment itself. By leveraging the environment and landscape, I imbued the level with a maze-like feel, challenging the player to solve puzzles and navigate their way to escape.
Blockout Phase
After outlining a broad blueprint, I proceeded to develop my initial Blockmesh, allowing me to delve into the finer details of my level design. Utilizing specific blocks and geography brushes, I sculpted the cave and crafted the exit at the beginning of the level. In creating the underground cave section, I employed blueprint coding to implement the puzzle elements essential for the player's escape.
Blockout to Functional
Following extensive playtesting and adjustments to enhance the level's pacing, I substituted the blocks with assets that enhanced the ambiance of an arctic escape setting. My focus was on optimizing the player's visual experience at every turn and ensuring multiple paths for progression through the level.
